Home automation is something that puts you several steps up the ladder as far as life style is concerned. Life style is something that is interpreted in a different way by different individuals. To some of us life style is a house in the country with the nearest neighbour a couple of miles away, no traffic whatsoever, and no hint of a security problem. To others it comes down to a home automation life style – an electronic fortress in the city protected by surveillance cameras and movement sensors, but where everything is completely automated. Where the lights come on by themselves and the curtains draw themselves closed when dusk comes around, where sound from the home theatre or hi-fi follows you around the house from room to room as your presence is so detected, and where you can switch on the coffee maker without having to leave the comfort of your armchair.
Your individual home automation life style is set by yourself in the initial discussions about what you actually want your system to do. In extreme installations, rooms can sense not only the presence of a person but know who that person is and perhaps set appropriate lighting, temperature and music while also taking into account day of week, time of day, and many other factors. Other automated tasks may include setting the air conditioning to an energy saving setting when the house is unoccupied, and restoring the normal setting when an occupant is about to return. More sophisticated home automation life style systems can maintain an inventory of products, recording their usage through an RFID tag, and prepare a shopping list or even automatically order replacements.
