Pumps that operate on the centrifugal principle are widely used to transport water, oil and gas over vast distances and, often, across harsh terrains such as desert or snowfields. Because of the long distances, multiple pumping stations, placed at regular intervals are needed as well as control measures to regulate pressure and flow rates within the pipelines.
