Civil construction and engineering involve the building of structures and how they relate to the environment. Take the age old parable of the man who built his house on the sand as an example. When the rains came the house was washed away as it was not a stable enough foundation for the foundations to be laid on. This shows that the two most environmental factors that can affect a structure are earth and water.

In this day and age we don’t have to go to the extremes of building our house on a rock as the parable goes to prevent the structure from washing away. Civil construction uses materials and elements such as cement and concrete to provide a solid foundation in just about any environment that is stable enough to carry a specific structure. However, the process is not always as simple as that as water and rain can still have a detrimental effect on buildings of all kinds.

The drainage and diversion of water therefore also plays a very important role in the design and civil construction of buildings and other types of structures. Many different means are used to divert water from affecting the integrity of structures. Two of the most common of these are channels and underground pipes that are used to collect and then divert water to a more appropriate location.

Over and above these elements, civil construction also takes into consideration other environmental factors. Cold and heat can affect any structure right from the foundation to the top of a skyscraper causing building materials to expand and contract which could result in a weakened building. High winds also need to be taken into consideration in civil engineering and the higher the building or structure, the more important this element of Mother Nature becomes.
