The Future Tank – An Improvement over Galvanised Steel

The Future Tank represents a considerable advance over the previously used galvanised steel structures. The latter were once widely used for the collection and storage of rainwater. In fact this type of material is not inherently resistant to corrosive action. However, rather than rusting like an untreated surface, it actually forms a thin film that then coats the entire surface to prevent any further degradation. It is thus very important not to disturb this coating when cleaning the reservoir.

Regardless of corrosion, when new, these older units were subject to leaching of excess zinc which, although it does not actually constitute a health risk actually harmful, does act to spoil the taste of the contents. Because of this risk, it was usually necessary to flush them thoroughly before putting them in use – a time consuming process that could also necessitate wasting a considerable volume of water.

Aquadam, a local manufacturer and supplier of storage solutions for water and other liquids used in agriculture and industry utilises a mixture of aluminium, zinc and silicon to provide a coating that has far better ant-corrosion properties and thus offers a much improved useful product life. The coating method involves hot dipping of the steel section in a process that is actually very similar to that used in galvanisation. The new coating is known under the registered trademark of ZINCALUME and is not limited to this type of use but is also widely used to coat roofing sheets and cladding.

The Muleby Tank Has Stood the Test of Time

It is pretty certain that we have all seen one at some time or another and almost as likely that, at the time, we paid scant attention to the structure known as a Muleby Tank upon which so many depend without even realising it. The object seen yet barely noticed would have been a fairly large structure with walls made from pre-cast concrete panels bonded tightly together to form a cylinder. The result is a tough watertight reservoir that is very widely used across South Africa and worldwide for the containment of water and other free-running materials.

There are certainly other ways in which to construct a reservoir. However, the unique combination of methods employed, first for the production of the component parts and later for the erection of this type of permanent structure, makes the task far quicker, much simpler and a good deal less labour-intensive than most alternatives.

Another advantage of the underlying concept is that it results in a product that can be installed almost anywhere either at ground level or buried to varying degrees where it may be preferred to have a more unobtrusive structure with less impact on the environment.

So what makes assembling one of these units so simple?  In fact, much of the hard work is completed in the manufacturing plant. Each made-to-measure concrete panel is pre-cast and cured under stringent conditions and readied for delivery. The process will include making provision for any manholes and pipes that may be required for the intended application.

On site, a suitable patch is levelled or excavated and the circular concrete base cast in situ prior to cementing the slabs in position. The joints between adjacent panels are closed with polyurethane seals and further tightened by monofilament strands arranged around its circumference. This post-tensioning step ensures that the joints will remain watertight indefinitely.

Manufactured and supplied by Aquadam, their specifications meet all of the international industry standards. The Muleby Tank can be found in agriculture, on the mines, in water treatment plants where effective containment is vital.
