Employees or other individuals who require access simply need to punch in their codes to obtain access. Keypads do require some additional security measures: employees who are prone to forgetfulness tend to write down their PINs or passwords. This in itself poses a potential security threat. PINs and passwords can also be forgotten.

Biometric Access Control Systems

Biometric control systems, as opposed to the other two types of access control solutions, do not require a card or a password. Instead they rely on unique human features, such as fingerprints, voice or the eye’s iris. These, scanned into a system, are compared to entries in a database to determine the access rights of an individual. More secure than card readers and keypads, these systems do sometimes elicit complaints of ‘invasion of privacy’.

Whichever of these access control solutions you consider implementing, it is recommended to take both your security requirements and your employees into account when the decision is being made.
